A palazzo for the city

The merchant’s mansion played an important representation role.
Francesco Datini put his luxurious home at the disposal of the Town of Prato. Following lengthy preparations, it hosted famous guests: Francesco Gonzaga, lord of Mantua, who arrived in Prato in 1392 to venerate the Virgin’s girdle; Leonardo Dandolo, ambassador of the Republic of Venice, who also arrived to see the Girdle in 1397; king Louis III of Naples on two occasions (1409 and 1410); and in 1410 cardinal Pietro d'Ailly with “50 persone tra piè e a chavallo”.
“L'ambasciatore venne ieri mattina qua e andò a desinare col podestà: e così mi pare avevano ordinato. E come ebbe desinato, andai da lui; e venne a dormire qui in casa; e poi andammo a vedere la Cintola; e tornammo qui a bere e mangiammo la pinocchiata che tu ci mandasti e anche io ne avevo fatta fare qua”.
