The works before Francesco returned to Prato

In 1354 Piero di Giunta del Rosso, Francesco Datini’s guardian, purchased for the merchant, who was living in Avignon, a farmhouse on the corner of Porcellatico, adjacent to his own small house; he paid 47 lire and 10 soldi for the property. Reconstruction work began on the building complex, supervised by a neighbour, Niccolozzo di ser Naldo Binducchi, who in various letters kept the owner updated on the progress of works. They progressed slowly, among the perplexities and uncertainties of Niccolozzo, who on various occasions invited Datini to return to Prato to supervise personally the building of his house.
“Non dico questo perché non dia opera a quello che scrivi e subito, ma perché non indugi a tornare sicché veda con i tuoi occhi come il lavoro deve andare” (Lettera Prato-Avignone, 6.11.1379. ASPO, Archivio Datini, 1091, cod. 33378).
In a letter dated August 1380 Niccolozzo communicated to Datini the measurements of his property:
“La casa è lunga braccia 14 e larga braccia 11 e il casolare lungo braccia 20 e largo braccia 15, l'orto è lungo braccia 31 e largo braccia 20. Tutto il terreno, cioè la casa e il casolare insieme, è lungo braccia 35, largo braccia 32”.
