The original Palazzo Datini, as it appeared on the merchant’s death, was quite different from the present-day building. Francesco Datini had invested enormous financial, intellectual and emotional resources in the original palazzo and its appurtenances, impressing on the entire block and adjoining buildings the strong mark of his personality in the heart of his city of origin from where he had started out to make his fortune.
The passing of the centuries and uninterrupted use profoundly changed the image of the building, bending it to the needs of life and charity to which the merchant had destined it.
Today we can again admire the house where Datini lived, thanks to the intervention in the mid XX century of Nello Bemporad, who restored at least the main historic nucleus of the palazzo to its original order.
